But Sanderson’s involvement with the ISSP program requires more than fieldwork. Sanderson is also learning to perform literature reviews and code using RStudio. Currently working toward a BSc in neuroscience, Sanderson’s graduate studies goal is to earn a master’s degree in either community health or biological science, and later attend medical school. Sanderson looks forward to the day he can teach first-year biology, “I want to lead by example and encourage more Indigenous youth to venture out into the STEM fields.”

Though he hopes to spark interest in the sciences, Sanderson harbours humanitarian inclinations as well. Sanderson volunteers with Bear Clan Patrol, a community safety initiative, and has worked with multiple grassroots programs serving Winnipeg’s youth. Sanderson recently learned to create Indigenous Starblankets and shared his art with his research mentors during the ISSP opening ceremony. Also musically inclined, Sanderson is a classical piano player taking lessons at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts. Sanderson has additional interests in art, culture, history and the blending of modern sciences and Indigenous ways of knowing.

“I believe that education and a clear understanding of history will help reconcile a future in Canada,” says Sanderson, “Indigenous people need to be at the front and center of this conversation. For this, education is important.” Sanderson strongly encourages students considering the ISSP program to apply. “You never know what opportunities could be awaiting. Projects, experience, and mentorship are big reasons to consider joining!”

In Summer 2022, Corey is being mentored by Dr. Sanoji Wijenayake and Dr. Nora Casson on a project entitled Impact of atmospheric phosphorous deposition in streams on the native microbiota.
