Faculty Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship

The Faculty Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship recognizes faculty members with a record of excellent mentorship and/or supervision of graduate students.

Outstanding mentors foster creativity of thought, novelty of research, and provide the underpinnings for graduate students to succeed in and out of academia.

Nominations for the 2025-2026 academic year are due September 15, 2025

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award an individual must:

  • Be a member of UWFA
  • Not have won this award within the last five years
  • Be currently teaching/supervising graduate students, or,
  • If not currently teaching/supervising, must have taught/supervised graduate students in the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline
Evaluation Criteria

Nomination packages are evaluated based on how well they demonstrate the faculty member’s ability to:

  • Inspire, guide, and challenge students to achieve excellence in scholarship;
  • Establish an environment that stimulates creativity, dialogue, and progression toward timely completion;
  • Offer individualized support based on each student’s unique strengths, weaknesses and future aspirations;
  • Encourage students to engage in research dissemination and knowledge mobilization activities within and beyond academia
Nomination Procedures

To nominate an eligible faculty member, please complete the Faculty Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship Nomination Form by the deadline above. 

A complete nomination package includes:

  1. A copy of the nominee’s CV. It is recommended that the CV includes a section outlining the successes of the candidate’s students: job placements, publications, awards and special recognitions, etc.
  2. A nomination letter from either a current student, or an alumnus who convocated in the 24 months prior to the nomination deadline.
    • The letter should outline the rationale for the nomination, emphasizing how the nominee meets the criteria above
    • Letters must be at most 750 words or three double-spaced pages
  3. A letter of support from a faculty member familiar with the nominee’s work with graduate students.
    • Letters must be at most 750 words or three double-spaced pages
    • Nominees may not write their own letters of support
  4. Up to two additional letters of support (750 words or less) from current or former students.
