The University of Winnipeg's Pathway to Graduate Studies celebrated its milestone fifth year in May. Nine Indigenous undergraduate students and more than 20 faculty members participated in the four-week Faculty of Graduate Studies program from May 1 to 26.
Pathways to Graduate Studies Program Celebrates Five Years of Research
Now entering its fifth year, P2GS is a staple event on the University’s summer calendar and it has opened the door for dozens of Indigenous students to gain valuable research opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Pathway to Graduate Studies (P2GS) offered five Indigenous students the opportunity to instruct Indigenous students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Meet three of these talented students.
Pathway to Graduate Studies 2021
UWinnipeg’s Pathway to Graduate Studies (P2GS) program returned this summer offering 10 Indigenous students research opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and five more Indigenous students the opportunity to instruct these students in statistics, biology, math, chemistry, and physics.
P2GS Program Builds Confidence
Ashley King spent part of last summer working with Dr. Athar Ata identifying anti-diabetic compounds in chamomile as part of The University of Winnipeg’s Pathway to Graduate Studies (P2GS) program.
The experience opened her eyes to research and networking opportunities she hadn’t realized were available to her and gave her hands-on experience testing theories she’d learned in class.
Louis Riel Bursaries – Meet the Talented Métis Students
As Louis Riel Day nears, The University of Winnipeg is proud to celebrate the achievements of 54 Métis students who were awarded Louis Riel Bursaries during the fall 2020 term. Since 1999, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) and its educational arm, the Louis Riel Institute (LRI), through funding from Employment and Social Development Canada, have provided more than $2 million in bursaries to Métis students attending UWinnipeg.

UWinnipeg Recognizes International Day of Women and Girls in Science
In celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, The University of Winnipeg is proud of the work being done locally and globally to empower women to pursue STEM education and careers.
You don’t have to look far to find great stories celebrating the power of mentorship.
For example, UWinnipeg’s Pathways to Graduate Studies program launched in 2019 to create space for Indigenous students to gain experience in a research environment, build a network with other science students, and learn about supports to prepare for upper-level science courses. The students who participated in this program say that the guidance and support they received had a huge impact.

2020 Randy Kobes Undergraduate Poster Symposium
The 15th annual Randy Kobes Undergraduate Poster Symposium is in the books, and it’s one students, faculty, and judges certainly won’t forget.
Research topics ranged from fish physiology to planetary exploration to cognitive psychology. Their experiences ranged from working for a month over the summer in the P2GS program to honours thesis students who are on their way to graduate school this fall.

The 2020 Pathway to Graduate Studies program concluded another successful year! Despite the ongoing pandemic causing everyone to pivot to a virtual format, the program continued its goal of offering research opportunities for Indigenous students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

NSERC Impact Story: Pathway to Graduate Studies Inspires Indigenous Student Research
For the second summer in a row, Indigenous students studying science at the University of Winnipeg were able to gain research experience and build a network with other Indigenous students, thanks to the Pathways to Graduate Studies (P2GS) program funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

P2GS participant, Connor Boubard, and Alumna, Sidney Leggett, Work on International Project
2020 Pathway participant, Connor Boubard, and 2019 Alumna, Sidney Leggett collaborated with P2GS program mentor and physicist Dr. Blair Jamieson as part of the international collaboration, contributing to the calibration of Super-K in this new phase by making measurements of the locations of the light-sensitive detectors using photogrammetry.

P2GS instructor, Mohamed Crossman Serb, shares his experience in the Indigenous Summer Scholars Program
“The first month was a lot of data compilation from various weather stations,” he explained. “Now we’re going through previous literature and making a compendium of carbon data from the long-term records at the International Institute for Sustainable Development-Experiment Lakes Area (IISD-ELA).”

The Pathway to Graduate Studies program returns to provide Indigenous students studying science at The University of Winnipeg the opportunity to gain research experience and build a network with other Indigenous students. Over four-weeks, June 1 – 26, 2020, students will participate in Zoom-based science classes in the morning and paid research in the afternoon, under the supervision of UWinnipeg faculty members.

Pathway to Graduate Studies Inspires Indigenous Student Research
The Pathway to Graduate Studies (P2GS) program is returning in 2020 to offer research opportunities for Indigenous students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) at UWinnipeg. The intent of this program is to support Indigenous students in natural science and engineering fields, introduce students to research opportunities, and encourage students to continue with their undergraduate programs and eventually into graduate programs.

Sidney Leggett (P2GS, 2019) is one of four students across Canada to be welcomed into the Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astrophysics Research Institute’s 2020 cross-disciplinary internship program, a unique opportunity that provides non-physics majors with $10,000 in funding to participate in astroparticle physics research.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) granted The University of Winnipeg over $100,000 as part of the PromoScience program. The P2GS program is one of three programs that will benefit from this award.
