Drop-in Sessions (Academic and Immigration Advising)

Each week, ISS hosts drop-in sessions for Academic Advising and Immigration Advising. Each of these sessions can be joined virtually (email iss@uwinnipeg.ca for the Zoom link) or in-person at ISS (8th floor Rice Centre, 491 Portage Ave). Please note that these sessions are for short (10-minute) questions.

In-person drop-ins will be everyday (Monday to Friday, 9 am - 4 pm) from August 26 - September 13

Academic Advising Drop-ins

Tuesdays and Wednesdays : 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Thursdays: 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Immigration Advising Drop-ins

Tuesdays: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Fridays: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

 

NOTE: There will be no drop-in sessions on Statutory holidays.


Immigration Information Session

International students are responsible for maintaining valid status in Canada and following regulations to comply with their study permit conditions. Do you understand the conditions of your study permit or temporary resident status? Do you want to work in Canada as an international student? Do you have questions related to immigration? Join the Immigration Advising Workshop to learn about your study permit and related information. Topics will include:

  • Important Immigration documents
  • Extending your study permit and understanding how to comply with your study permit conditions
  • Working in Canada as an international student
  • Post-graduation work permit
  • Other important information

When: September 10, 12:30 pm

Where: ISS Lounge, 8th floor Rice Centre (491 Portage Ave).

Students are encouraged to bring a copy of their current study permit or visa to confirm conditions or ask related questions about their immigration documents.


Academic Advising Information Session

During this session will will provide a detailed overview of the services provided by Academic Advisors, and the basics of degree planning. This session is primarily intended for new students, but all students are welcome to attend because we will be able to answer any questions that you might have about how degrees are structured, and explain the appeal options available to you if you experience any unexpected personal issues during your courses.

When: September 9. 10:30 am - 11:15 am

Ask a 'Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)' Officer

Do you have questions about taxes? A Canada Revenue Agency Outreach Officer will be on campus to answer questions about the tuition tax credit, registering for benefits, updating addresses and other tax related questions. Students are encouraged to drop by anytime during the hours listed below.

When: August 29 and September 3, come anytime after 9 am

Where: ISS Lounge, 8th floor Rice Centre (491 Portage Ave).


Social Insurance Number (S.I.N.) Clinic

A Service Canada representative will be on campus to help provide Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) to study permit holders. All international students with valid study permits must have a SIN number to work in Canada. If you are interested in getting a SIN or renewing your SIN, please bring the following original documents to the ISS anytime during the clinic (details below).

1- A valid study permit

2- A piece of government-issued photo ID.

When: August 29 and September 3, come anytime after 9 am

Library and Research Information Session

Students are encouraged to join our Library and Research Information Session, where our International and Extended Services Librarian will provide a basic overview of the various services provided by the Library, and will include a demonstration of how to use library catalogues and databases to conduct your academic research for classes. This session will also provide some background on how to properly cite your sources.

When: September 12th - 12:30pm - 1:20pm

Wellness Hub Presentation

Learn more about mental health tools and resources on and off campus.

When: September 11, 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm

Where: ISS Lounge, 8th floor Rice Centre (491 Portage Ave).


Cookies, Coffee and Conversation Circle (weekly)

Do you want to improve your English conversation skills and make friends? Join us every Monday for Cookies, Coffee and Conversation!

When: Every Monday starting September 23, 10:30 am - 11:20 am
