Internal Research Grants

The University of Winnipeg is committed to assisting our faculty in the pursuit of academic research and knowledge mobilization. Through a variety of internal research grant programs, we support faculty at all stages of their research program. See more below for an overview of the internal research grants and more information on institutional research policies.

For Major Research Grants, the Department Research Committee and Department Chair are required to provide an evaluation and sign off on an application. Researchers must then upload these evaluations to your application in WebGrants before the intake deadline. Here are the forms:

***NEW FOR 2023-2024***

  1. Discretionary Grants (DG) will now allow researchers to cover research expenses incurred up to 60 days before submitting their application.
    1. Example: a DG submitted on June 15 could be used to cover research expenses from April 15 to June
    2. While our office cannot guarantee that every application will be successful, the option to retroactively allocate expenses will ensure that researchers who face the requirement to immediately pay for a research expense (rather than wait until after the next intake) will still have an opportunity to apply for funds to cover these costs.
    3. Researchers are still encouraged to hold off on incurring research expenses until after the date of application, whenever possible.
  1. Travel Grants (TG) and Distinguished Faculty Travel Awards (DFTA) will be shifting back to 4 intakes per year: June 15, September 15, January 15, and March 15. The restriction on receiving one TG or DFTA in a fiscal year remains the same.
    1. In addition, TGs and DFTAs will no longer require Department Chair and Department Research Committee evaluations.
