Call for Student Papers
We invite students to submit papers for the 2026 IUS Student Paper Contest.
Instructions for Authors
- The primary author of the paper must be a student attending the University of Winnipeg in their third year or more of study. Students in their first and second year of study are not eligible to submit.
- Only original papers not published or accepted for publication elsewhere will be accepted.
- Students are encouraged to enter a paper written for coursework during the current academic year.
- Manuscripts should be a minimum of 2000 words in length, and no more than 8000 words (excluding sources).
- Please be advised that the winning paper will be subject to editing.
- One submission per student annually.
- The Institute of Urban Studies reserves the right to decline choosing a winner.
What to Submit
- One electronic copy in Word format.
- Cover page should include name, mailing address, telephone, e-mail address, and a brief biographical statement which includes faculty of study and interests.
- Short abstract (Max 100 words). The abstract can be submitted in your email to us, or at the beginning of the paper.
- Articles should contain a table of contents, when necessary.
- Photos or graphics must be of high quality.
Criteria for Acceptance
The following criteria will be used in reviewing the papers for publication.
- *** Relevance to urban studies – this is critical. Papers should address an urban issue directly, and/or comment on how an issue impacts cities, or how cities respond, etc.
- Subject mastery, originality, and/or addressing a contemporary urban issue.
- Technical mastery, including competent writing, syntax, spelling and grammar.
- Logical organization.
- Appropriate documentation: APA, Chicago, MLA, APSA.
