Red River Co-Operative Ltd., has committed to make a gift of $25,000 to The University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics. This scholarship will fund the Red River Co-Operative Scholarship in Support of Cooperative Studies. This is the largest gift made to UWinnipeg’s Cooperative Studies program since the originating establishing gifts contributed in 2012 by Canada’s Co-operative sector including gifts from: Credit Union Central of Manitoba; Federated Co-operatives Ltd; The Co-operators Group Limited; Arctic Co-operatives Limited; Assiniboine Credit Union Limited; and Red River Co-operative Ltd as well as the Province of Manitoba.

RRC and Brian

We are proud to announce this gift as being the first gift to the program since establishing itself as the first undergraduate program specializing in co-operative enterprises in Canada in 2017. This scholarship is essential to the ongoing success of the program as we continue to see increasing enrolments in this area and we hope it will continue to draw more students too.

Red River Co-Operative’s gift will be paid over the next five years and will support as many as 25 students with scholarships of at least $1,000. This distinguished scholarship has already received $9,000 in funding from Red River Co-Operative Ltd. and has been awarded nine times to the best and brightest of The University of Winnipeg’s Cooperative Enterprise students.

Dr. Hugh Grant, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics says, “I would like to say thank you to Red River Co-Operative Ltd for not only continuing, but increasing their support to our students as the Faculty of Business and Economics grows and further establishes this unique and vibrant program. We hope this generous scholarship will not only boost students already involved in co-operative studies, but also attract new students who may be interested in learning more about or pursuing a career in the co-operative sector.”

The Chair in Co-operative Enterprises in UWinnipeg’s Faculty of Business promotes teaching and research on co-operative enterprises in Canada.  The Chair is an important element in the Faculty of Business and Economics’ attempt to broaden the scope of a traditional business program which focuses mostly on for-profit enterprises, to now include other business models such as institutional management and governance.
