Research Seed Money Awards for 2010: Collaborative Project
Cultural Studies Collaborative Project
Multi-disciplinary including the following departments and individuals:
English Department: Mavis Reimer, Kathryn Ready, Zbigniew Izydorczyk, Heather Milne, Kathleen Venema, Catherine Tosenberger, Deborah Schnitzer, Margaret Sweatman; Rhetoric, Writing and Communications: Catherine Taylor, Jennifer Clary-Lemon; as well as Claire Borody, Theatre and Film; Angela Failler, Womens and Gender Studies/ Sociology and Peter Ives, Politics.
Use Seed Funds to bring together four key figures in Cultural Studies in Canada for workshop to discuss current state of Social Science and Humanities research and increased demand for interdisciplinary studies of culture in Canada. Grad students in the Cultural Studies program also invited to attend.
Results - to define a project that we would be particularly well suited to undertake as a collaborative group which would contribute to ongoing national/international inquiries.
The 4 scholars are:
1. Graham Carr, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Concordia University and current President of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences;
2. Imre Szeman, CRC in Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta and co-editor of Canadian Cultural Studies: A Reader;
3. Jody Berland, Associate Professor of Humanities at York University and editor of Topia, the premier Cultural Studies journal in Canada;
4. Diana Brydon, CRC in Globalization and Cultural Studies at the University of Manitoba and collaborator in the ongoing Building Global Democracy Programme.
