Faculty of Arts

Creative Work

Self-expression is central to the human condition. In the Faculty of Arts, a number of our faculty and students are engaged in creative works that include poetry, novels, short stories, plays and film scripts and stage productions. These works bring a new audience to the University and strengthen our connection to the community.

Seven Doors

The UW Department of Theatre and Film recently closed its third-year Honours acting class production of Botho Strauss's hilarious and unsettling absurdist comedy, Seven Doors. In this translation by Jeremy Sams with direction by faculty member Christopher Brauer, class actors, designers, and technical students did a superb job, playing to near capacity houses throughout the run. Our young actors interpreted the challenging script with great creativity while our imaginative designers and diligent technicians achieved particularly satisfying results on stage. Congratulations to all involved.

From the Invitation to Seven Doors:

"Seven Doors" is a rare mix of absurdity, sketch comedy, and post-modern tragedy with a couple of musical numbers. In eleven playful and profound scenes, the characters delve deeper and deeper into hilarity and absurdity as they try to make sense of their feelings. The characters cling fiercely to the personae they have chosen and as a result, they suffer (often hilarious) confusion and distress when they try to connect and disconnect in this modern world. Where Sartre made the point that hell is other people, Strauss points out that hell is ourselves.
