Canada Research Chair in Young People's Texts and Cultures - Dr. Mavis Reimer
Dr. Mavis Reimer, Professor of English, was awarded a five year term as a Canada Research Chair starting in 2005. In 2006, the Centre for Research in Young People's Texts and Cultures
(CRYTC) was established. Since that time, CRYTC has thrived under Dr.
Reimer's direction; it is now home to faculty members with diverse
interests, has a number of affiliates (both local and international),
and has hosted visiting scholars from Canada, the US, Brazil, Japan,
China and Australia. Between 2010 and 2013, CRYTC will host the first
international Visiting Trudeau Fellow. CRYTC also houses an
international journal, Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures. Jeunesse is published simutaneously online and is carried by Project Muse, the database hosted by Johns Hopkins University. In November 2010, the University of Winnipeg announced that Dr. Reimer's Canada Research Chair has been renewed for a second five-year term. (Click here to go that announcement.) According to Dr. David Fitzpatrick, Dean of Arts, "this renewal exemplifies what successful CRC funding can achieve. The study of children's literature has long been an interest of the English Department at the University of Winnipeg. CRYTC ensures that this research can go forward in interesting new directions."
Dr. Catherine Hunter, Chair of the English Department, notes that Dr. Reimer's contributions go well beyond her important research. "Dr. Reimer is not only an example of the stellar quality of research among our faculty, but she exemplifies the true spirit of teaching with her generous support in helping to develop the work of others, both faculty and students, locally and internationally."
Together with other Canadian scholars, the University of Winnipeg researchers at CRYTC led by Dr. Reimer founded the Association for Research in the Cultures of Young People (ARCYP). Its mandate is to promote interdisciplinary study in the field across Canada and to create opportunities for collaborations between academic scholars and community organizations. Since 2006, CRTYC has also managed the finances and membership lists of the International Research Society for Children's Literature (IRSCL).
