Claudette Michell (1966-2012)

Claudette Michell in her office
I met with Claudette Michell, then Program Coordinator for the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies, in the winter term of 2011-12. In speaking with her at that time, she shared with me that when she began her education, she had no real background or history for herself as an Aboriginal person. She explained that she was fortunate to be able to work with an elder for the duration of her program. As well, she met another Aboriginal woman at the University of Winnipeg who mentored her. For Claudette, the understandings she gained through her course work and involvement in ceremonies, such as the Sundance Circle, were a big part of reclaiming her identity as an Aboriginal person.
Claudette gained this for herself but she was also deeply committed to passing what
she'd learned on to others,
through her work as Program Coordinator of the Department of Urban and Inner-City
Studies, but also through her involvement with the community in
her own
time. In December 2011, Claudette was recognized by the Aboriginal Education Directorate as the Aboriginal Educator of the Month for her contributions.
Claudette touched me with her grace and quiet confidence. She touched so many people and made a difference in those lives in the way only a few can. She will be missed.
