Beginning University Successfully (BUS) Program

Beginning University Successfully (BUS) program

Designed for students who don’t have their grade 12, this is an access program by which students achieve Mature Student status. Students take "Introduction to University" and "Academic Writing" in a single term and need a C or better to earn the Mature Student status designation.

The BUS program has been offered for two groups of students. This fall a second group of students started the program and attended a five-day Medicine Wheel Workshop before the courses started. The workshop addressed the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of the participants; for example, there were workshops in grammar and journal writing and a stress management sharing circle. Dr. Jim Silver, Chair of the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies, explains that they are always looking for “different and creative ways of supporting students”.

Students in the BUS program are experiencing success. On Fri. Nov. 25, 2011, a ceremony was held to acknowledge the success of students in this second group of BUS students in attaining their Mature Student status.

Chantel Henderson and Claude Michell receive their awards from Kerri Irvin-Ross, Minister of Housing and Community Development

Claude Michell was a student in the first BUS group and Corinne Murdoch is part of the second group. Corinne will also be eligible to do a summer position with Manitoba Housing. Chantel Henderson is a student in the regular Urban and Inner-City Studies Program. Congratulations to each of them!
