Students Leading Students Funding
The University of Winnipeg is excited to announce the launch of a Students Leading Students, a brand new project to fund our students’ outbound exchange! This offering has been made possible by the Government of Canada’s new Global Skills Opportunity program.
This funding is available until Fall term 2024 only.
Global Skills Opportunity is a national outbound student mobility program that is expected to enable more than 16,000 Canadian college and undergraduate-level university students from across the country to acquire the global skills employers want and the Canadian economy needs. A key component of the Government of Canada’s International Education Strategy, Global Skills Opportunity is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada and is administered jointly by Colleges and Institutes Canada and Universities Canada.
Who Can Participate?
While open to all Canadian post-secondary students, the national program targets groups for whom international experiences have traditionally been less accessible — specifically:
- Indigenous students
- Students from low-income backgrounds
- Students with disabilities.
It also aims to diversify destination countries where Canadian students pursue international learning, so students going to destinations other than Australia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom as also eligible.
How Much Funding is Available?
Depending on where you go and for how long, funds may cover between 40 to 90% of the costs of your exchange! Funds will be allocated based on the GSO target group criteria and destinations, the cost of the exchange destination, and the length of your Exchange. More than 100 UWinnipeg students are expected to benefit from the Students Leading Students program! Funding is available until Fall term 2024 only.
How to Participate
A supplemental application will be available to students who have applied and been approved to participate in an exchange program. This program is available until Fall term 2024 only.

This is the beginning of an exciting time for international exchange at UWinnipeg! We will be establishing an exchange alumni network, as well as exciting new supports to help you make the most of your Exchange experience.
