Canadian Workplace Experience Program

Our 7-week English program offers 4 weeks of classroom study followed by a 3-week placement in a local organization, giving students the opportunity to speak English in a Canadian workplace environment. In the workplace, students will have the opportunity to job shadow, which will deepen their understanding of Canadian workplace culture. Many students find the immersion into an English speaking workplace environment is beneficial towards helping them prepare for their future career goals.

*The application deadline for every program is two weeks prior to the start of each session.


Program Information

Week 1- 4 : Classes

  • We ensure that every student is placed in a class that reflects their level of ability and competence in the English language, which is determined for each student based on a pre-arrival placement test.
  • Morning sessions focus on developing skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students take part in a seminar specifically designed for The Canadian Workplace Experience Program called, "English in the Workplace". This seminar will improve professional communication skills and prepare students for the last 3 weeks of the program which they will spend at a local host organization.

Week 5- 7 : Work Placements

  • During weeks 5-7, students will be placed in a local host organization.
  • Placement hours will vary by organization. Students are required to participate approximately 25-30 hours per week.
  • Examples of placements that students have enjoyed in previous programs include: museums, art galleries, libraries, radio stations, athletic facilities, hospitality organizations, business offices and a variety of non-profit businesses.

Workplace Commitment

Students must be available for the full 3 weeks to meet the CWE certification requirements.

Socio-Cultural Activities

  • Students benefit from their participation in scheduled social activities that begin when classroom learning ends.
  • During socio-cultural activities, students have the opportunity to practice English skills as they participate in informal English conversation. Students will also experience interesting local history and culture, local festivals, the arts, sports and much more!

In English Please!

In order to maximize the benefits for every student, all students are expected to follow a strict English only policy during class time, while at placement and at every activity.

Recommended Language Proficiency

There is a recommended minimum language proficiency requirement to participate in the 7 week Canadian Work Experience Program.

  • TOEFL iBT 61 or equivilant

  • IELTS 5.5 overall

  • TOEIC 800

Homestay Program

  • If you choose, you may apply to stay with a host family while you study in this program.
  • Every effort is made to find the best match for students & families involved in the program.
  • The benefits of homestay include many additional opportunities for students to practice their English skills in authentic living situations while outside of the classroom.

Health Insurance                    

Health coverage is required when in Canada and a student insurance plan is provided with guard.me.  You must purchase health insurance through UWinnipeg. Health insurance must be paid before or upon arrival in Winnipeg.

  • Program Application Fee  $110.00
  • Tuition  $1,950.00
  • Health Insurance Fee *see application for current rate
  • Homestay Application Fee  $100.00
  • Homestay Placement Fee  $200.00
  • Homestay Fee  $700.00

NOTE: All programs, dates, policies, and fees are subject to change without notice.  The University of Winnipeg reserves the right to cancel courses or programs; in these cases, all payments are returned to students. All fees are listed and due in Canadian dollars.
