Canadian Workplace Experience

Canadian Workplace Experience Program offers 4 weeks of classroom study followed by a 3-week placement in a local organization, giving students the opportunity to speak English in a Canadian workplace environment. In the workplace, students will have the opportunity to job shadow, which will deepen their understanding of Canadian workplace culture. Many students find the immersion into an English speaking workplace environment is beneficial towards helping them prepare for their future career goals.

Program Highlights:

Classroom study followed by the opportunity to put language into practice during the workplace component participating in discussions and activities
Opportunities to experience the culture and lifestyle though socio-cultural activities.

Program Information

Week 1 - 4 : Classes

  • We ensure that every student is placed in a class that reflects their level of ability and competence in the English language, which is determined for each student based on a pre-arrival placement test.
  • Morning sessions focus on developing skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students take part in a seminar specifically designed for The Canadian Workplace Experience Program called, "English in the Workplace". This seminar will improve professional communication skills and prepare students for the last 3 weeks of the program which they will spend at a local host organization.

Week 5 - 7 : Placements

  • During weeks 5-7, students will be placed in a local host organization.
  • Placement hours will vary by organization. Students are required to participate approximately 25-30 hours per week.
  • Examples of placements that students have enjoyed in previous programs include: museums, art galleries, libraries, radio stations, athletic facilities, hospitality organizations, business offices and a variety of non-profit businesses.

 Socio-Cultural Activities

  • Students benefit from their participation in scheduled social activities that begin when classroom learning ends.
  • During socio-cultural activities, students have the opportunity to practice English skills as they participate in informal English conversation. Students will also experience interesting local history and culture, local festivals, the arts, sports and much more!

Recommended Language Proficiency

There is a recommended minimum language proficiency requirement to participate in the 7 week Canadian Work Experience Program.

  • TOEFL iBT 61 or equivalent
  • IELTS 5.5 overall
  • TOEIC 800

Health Insurance                    

Health coverage is required when in Canada and a student insurance plan is provided with guard.me. You must purchase health insurance through UWinnipeg. Health insurance must be paid before or upon arrival in Winnipeg.
