Mon. Jan. 23, 2023

We are happy to announce that at the 2023 Society for Classical Studies (SCS) conference, held in New Orleans, Peopling the Past, co-founded by our very own Dr. Melissa Funke, won the Outreach Prize. The Outreach prize recognizes work that makes the ancient Mediterranean accessible to a broader audience.

“Peopling the Past is an excellent example of the ground-breaking public outreach work happening in Classics right now,” said Dr. Peter Miller, Chair of the Department of Classics. “At UWinnipeg, our Department has made the general public a major focus of our work in recent years, so it’s great to see Dr Funke recognized for her efforts in this area.”

Peopling the Past is a Digital Humanities initiative that hosts free, open access resources for teaching and learning about real people in the ancient world, and the people who study them. It is a joint initiative by 7 junior scholars, all of whom are women. It was launched after the onset of the pandemic lockdown and has now has gained so much momentum 3 years in, they will be hosting their first colloquium in March 2023.
