STEPS

1. If you would like to discuss your qualifications, options, and the application procedure, contact THFM Student Advisor Melinda Tallin (tallin@uwinnipeg.ca or 204-786-9955) who can help you figure out where you stand in terms of credit hours, requirements, time commitments, etc.

2. Prepare your materials for your application:

Samples of your work (required):

NEW! 1 short script (pdf file only please) from one of the film samples

  • FILM SAMPLES: You are required to submit TWO examples of your directing work with your application. The films you submit should demonstrate your abilities as a filmmaker, where you were the Director or the Cinematographer for the entire film. Please do NOT submit Intro to Film projects made in a group. Projects made alone during COVID are acceptable. Film credits must be included and your specific role must be stated in those credits. The links may be on Vimeo or Youtube.  (If you are unsure of which platform to use, or are unable to attach them, please contact thfm@uwinnipeg.ca.)
  • NEW! SCRIPT SAMPLE: One short script submission from one of the films submitted; this should be the script you used for production - NOT an updated post-production script. This script should be submitted as a pdf file only and can be submitted by link in the application form or sent directly to thfm@uwinnipeg.ca with the subject line “FILM II APPLICATION”.
  • Please note: We understand the difficulties of the last three years and the burden of COVID restrictions, and we’re sympathetic to those challenges; this will be considered when your material is viewed.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT FILM II

If you are accepted into FILM II, you will be provided with a list of eleven films to watch before class begins in the fall. All films will be available to watch for free online.

If you are accepted into FILM II, it is strongly recommended that you not take more than one other practical film course simultaneously (Film Horror, Film Comedy, Documentary Filmmaking, Sound Editing, Advanced Picture Editing). FILM II is a full-year course and requires a very serious time commitment, both to your own film and to the films of your FILM II classmates. Deadline extensions will not be granted based on students being overloaded with film projects or coursework from other classes. It is suggested however, that you take a post-production course such as Advanced Picture Editing or Sound Editing to increase your post-production skills.

Students make one short film during FILM II (in addition to several filmed directing exercises).  If you are accepted into FILM II you must arrive in class on the first day ready to pitch three solid ideas for the short film you want to make. Your film ideas should be possible to film in all weather conditions as Film Production takes place from mid-December to late February. Post-production involves picture editing, sound editing/design and mix, and colour grading. Post-production takes place in the final 2-3 months of the course.

IF YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE WITH THE FORM, PLEASE CONTACT MELINDA AT m.tallin@uwinnipeg.ca or 204-786-9955.
