Dr. Stephanie Bugden
Associate Professor, Department of Psychology
Chancellor’s Emerging Research Award Recipient
Bio:
Dr. Stephanie Bugden is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology whose research focuses on how children develop foundational numeracy and mathematics skills, and why some struggle to do so. Using a combination of brain imaging and behavioral methods, she examines individual differences in how the brain processes numerical information and how these processes are shaped by cultural context. Through her multidisciplinary approach, Dr. Bugden aims to improve early identification of math learning difficulties and to inform effective educational interventions.
Talk: How Do Children Learn Number Symbols? Insights from Portable Brain Imaging
Understanding the meaning of number symbols, such as digits and spoken number words, is fundamental not only for later math achievement but also for navigating everyday tasks. Yet the ways in which the developing brain supports the learning of numerical concepts remain poorly understood. Supported by the Chancellor’s Emerging Research Award, Dr. Bugden’s current research uses child-friendly portable brain imaging tools to explore how the “numerical brain” emerges in preschool children and how sociocultural experiences shape this developmental process.
Dr. Conor Whately
Professor of Classics
Chancellor’s Research Excellence Chair
Bio:
Dr. Conor Whately is a Professor of Classics at the University of Winnipeg, where he has taught since 2009. His research spans war, historiography, and frontiers in the Roman and Byzantine worlds. He has authored dozens of book chapters and journal articles and is the author or editor/co-editor of ten books, including the forthcoming Ancient Warfare: The Basics (Routledge, 2026).
Talk: Inside the Roman Military: A World of Letters
The Roman military produced enormous quantities of written material, troop rosters, food receipts, enlistment certificates, and more. But beyond official documentation, soldiers and officers also wrote many thousands of personal letters. Some were formal communications between officers; others were intimate notes from young recruits to their families. In this presentation, Dr. Whately introduces the wide and varied world of Roman military letters, exploring their content, form, and historical context.
