Mon. Jun. 22, 2020

The Department of English is excited to announce three gold medalists, 2020. The gold medals are awarded to students with the highest GPA.

Jase Falk

Jase Falk wins the Honours Gold Medal.

Jase Falk would like to thank the Department of English for all the challenges and encouragement they received in their time studying here. Jase is set to begin a master’s program in Gender Studies at Queen’s University in Fall 2020 and hopes to continue publishing poetry and expanding their creative practice alongside their academic studies.

Cale Plett

Cale Plett wins the 4-Year Gold Medal, as well as the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for the Highest Standing in Arts (4-Year).

Here is what Cale Plett has to say about his accomplishments:

“I'm honoured to be the recipient of these Gold Medals. At the same time, it is important not to misinterpret such awards as simple measures of talent, intelligence, or even ability. Certainly, I worked hard, sometimes too hard, throughout my degree. However, I recognize that due to an accumulation of privileges, I had the time, safety, support, and emotional energy to do so. While numeric measures of achievement and success will improve my opportunities going forward, I acknowledge that often these measures tell stories of unearned advantage, not of skill or effort.”

James Ray

James Ray wins the 3-Year Gold Medal.

Jim Ray writes:

“I enrolled at the University of Winnipeg many years after high school and chose English because I have always loved to read and tell stories. I initially had no expectations or goals, other than a vague desire to expand my horizon. My first day I knew I’d made the right decision. I had found an environment that encouraged me to challenge myself and always present my best work.

Although I worked full-time for most of my degree, I very seldom missed a class. I did not want to miss anything. I also learned much from my peers and was continually fascinated by the ideas, questions and creations they shared. Learning became my goal and after my first creative writing class, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I am grateful to everyone who helped me along the way. It was not an easy path and I could not have done it alone. I especially want to thank all my teachers, who gave their time answering my many questions and helping me to do my best. As relieved as I am that this stage of learning is over, I cannot wait for the next to begin.”

The Department would like to congratulate all our recent graduates, listed below in alphabetical order. It has been a privilege to work with each one of you.
