If CO₂ in freshwater is rising, is this a problem?

CO₂ may be increasing in freshwater ecosystems for a variety of reasons. Climate change, invasive species management, and aquaculture can all expose freshwater biota to high CO₂. We have completed a series of studies to determine whether exposure to high CO₂ alters native fishes and mussels.  Key findings have shown that CO₂ alters some common fish behaviors, and mussels exposed to CO₂ have been found to undergo physiological change. Current work at U of Winnipeg is attempting to understand the potential for transgenerational and parental effects to mediate biotic responses to elevated CO₂.
