Dark Matter: what is it good for?

A very diverse set of observations over enormous ranges of scales have led scientists to believe there is dark matter in the Universe. In terms of the energy budget of the Universe, it is roughly five times more important than anything we have directly observed here on Earth.

I will review these and describe some of the current research efforts to understand this mysterious, yet important component of the Universe.
