Reconciliation and Indigenization: A Settler Scholar’s Reflections

Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC, 2015) found that “Colonialism remains an ongoing process, shaping both the structure and the quality of the relationship between the settlers and Indigenous peoples” (p. 45). It called for reconciliation including through consciousness-raising, relationship-building, and transformation of systems. This talk describes processes and outcomes of community-partnered research that documents efforts to transform Inuit schools and revitalize Inuktitut. I also share how partnering with Inuit scholars and students has transformed my research and teaching practices and ways in which I, as a settler scholar, respond personally and professionally to the TRC’s calls to action.
