EDUC-5001-770 ST: Rethinking Mental Health in Schools

This course introduces guidance counsellors and teachers to peer-reviewed critical scholarship within the field of mental health. Critical scholarship exposes and addresses misinformation and potential for harm in routine mental health premises and practices. Ethics guidelines for Canadian counsellors require full disclosure of all relevant information needed for informed decision-making, especially information related to risk of harm. Access to critical mental health knowledge is necessary for informed choices regarding mental health referral, assessment, diagnosis, and psychiatric drugs. Course participants gain understanding of conventional and critical mental health knowledge and learn non-pathologizing, anti-colonial, anti-oppressive approaches to supporting children and youth.

This course counts as an elective in the General stream.

 

EDUC-5408-770 Teaching Students in the Inner City School

This course analyzes educational responses to the changes faced by children and youth in Canadian inner-city schools. It examines the historical, cultural, political, and educational issues surrounding academically and socially under-served students within an inner-city setting. Identity, race, culture, gender, and human rights are analyzed in relation to culturally appropriate pedagogy.

This course counts as an elective in the Inclusive Education and General streams.

Learning Disabilities (LD), often termed invisible or hidden disabilities, can take many different forms and wide range of students to varying degrees. Issues emphasized in this course include definition; affect a types of disability; characteristics; self-concept; diagnosis; assessment; and remedial, compensatory, and classroom strategies.

This course counts as an elective in the Inclusive Education, School Counselling, and General streams.

This course examines the many facets of group dynamics, including characteristics, formation and dissolution, stages of change, and the role of the counsellor in facilitating collaboration, cooperation, and group processes.
Strategies for facilitating productive and therapeutic guidance groups are investigated and the development of
leadership skills in group counselling are conducted under supervision.

This is a core course in the School Counselling stream and counts as an elective in the Inclusive Education and General stream.

 

EDUC-5426-770 School Counselling Practicum Skills

Location: LIVE: Scheduled class times will take place using an online platform. Students must be available during the posted lecture times for live streaming and/or group interactions. High speed internet is mandatory.

The practice skills course provides students with the opportunity to practice counselling skills and techniques in a supervised lab setting. Students analyze case studies and use digital recordings to practice counselling, consulting and coordinating skills. Students are required to conduct 10 individual counselling sessions with a client. Students are expected to demonstrate a progression of skills that allow gradual progress into direct service with students in a school setting (under guidance of a site supervisor).

Students must have completed at least 18 credit hours of Counselling courses, including 12 credit hours of Core courses and 6 credit hours of Counselling electives, in order to register for EDUC-5426.

This is a core course in the School Counselling stream.

This course presents as overview of educational theories, assessment procedures, delivery systems, and adaptive programming practices designed to serve students with special needs. Topics to be addressed include foundational definitions, history of inclusive education, neurodevelopmental disorders, etiologies, learning disabilities, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, enrichment, individualized programming, and classroom strategies to promote student success. The intent is to make the learning of the principles of inclusion meaningful by relating them to their application.

This is a core course in the Inclusive Education stream and counts as an elective in the General stream.

Specifically, this course reviews recent scholarship and research into students with special learning needs, drawn from the fields of psychology, sociology and education. Additionally, the course focuses on constantly changing demographics in the schools.

This is a core course in the Inclusive Education stream and counts as an elective in the General stream.
