2021 Changes to Athletic Therapy Enhanced Major Program

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the recent changes in the revised Enhanced Major in Athletic Therapy?
  1. High School Math requirement.

    • As of May 2021, students admitted to the enhanced major in Athletic therapy will require Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S. Students are advised to consult with a member of the Department in planning their course of study.

    • Students registered in the Kinesiology major prior to 2021 will be waived of this requirement.

  2. Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 1000) is no longer a requirement.

    • In place, KIN-2105(3) Sport and Exercise Psychology and KIN-3305(3) Physical Activity; Promotion and Adherence have been added to the program.

    • This has implications on which statistics and research methods courses you can select given that you would no longer have intro psych as a prerequisite.

    • You would be eligible for:

      1. STAT-1301 Statistical Analysis

      2. STAT-1501(3) Elementary Biological Statistics

      3. SOC-2126(3) Introduction to Research Design and Qualitative Research

    • Current students with Intro Psychology are still eligible to take other stats and research methods courses.

  3. KIN 2500 Practicum I (Field and Clinical) has been discontinued.
     

    • Students who have taken this course can still apply it to their program in place of new courses that have been added.

  4. KIN 3500 Practicum II has been renamed KIN 3500 Practicum I.

    • Students who have taken KIN 2500 Practicum I can still take KIN 3500 Practicum I in spite of the same course name.

  5. KIN 4500 Practicum III has been renamed KIN 4500 Practicum II.

    • Students who have taken KIN 3500 Practicum II can still take KIN 4500 Practicum II in spite of the same course name.

  6. KIN-2503(3) Athletic Taping and Splinting Techniques has changed to KIN-3202(3) Musculoskeletal Support Techniques.

    • Students who have previously taken KIN-2503(3) cannot take KIN-3202(3) for credit.

  7. KIN-3503(3) Massage Techniques in Sport has changed to KIN-3506(3) Soft Tissue Manual Therapy.

    • Students who have previously taken KIN-3503(3) cannot take this new KIN-3506(3) for credit.

  8. KIN-4301(3) Applied Human Anatomy has been renumbered to KIN-3301(3) and offered in third year.

    • Students who have previously taken KIN-4301(3) cannot take this new KIN-3301(3) for credit.

  9. KIN-4106(3) Exercise Physiology in Chronic Disease has been added as a required course.

    • Students accepted in to Athletic Therapy Kinesiology prior to Fall 2021 are encouraged but not required to take this course for credit.

  10. BUS-1201(3) Introduction to Business I has been replaced with BUS-2755(3) Business Planning Basics.

    • Students who have previously taken BUS-1201(3) cannot take BUS-2755(3) for credit.

  11. KIN-3100(3) Professionalism in Applied Health is a new required course.

    • Students accepted in to Athletic Therapy Kinesiology prior to Fall 2021 are encouraged but not required to take this course for credit.

2. When does the revised course come into effect?

The revised curriculum takes effect May 2021.

3. I started Kinesiology - AT in 2018. Do I need to apply to the Enhanced Major?

You should be going into your fourth year of the program and do not have to apply but should notify the department.

4. I started Kinesiology - AT in 2019. Do I need to apply to the Enhanced Major?

You would be entering into the third year and do not have to apply but should notify the department.

5. What if I registered as a Kinesiology Major in 2019 and am applying for AT for Fall 2021?

You can still apply with the previous 60 credit hours of prerequisites that were required. Some waivers will be made where appropriate. Reminder that applications are due April 1st of each intake year.

If accepted in to the AT program, you then have to complete years 3 and 4 of the Enhanced Major in AT as per the new criteria.

6. What if I registered as a Kinesiology Major in 2020 and am applying for AT for Fall 2022?

You can still apply with the previous 60 credit hours of prerequisites that were required. Some waivers will be made where appropriate. Reminder that applications are due April 1st of each intake year.

If accepted in to the AT program, you then have to complete years 3 and 4 of the Enhanced Major in AT as per the new criteria.

7. What if I have already taken courses that are no longer part of the program?

You should contact the Department Chair to have a waiver registered with the university so that it does not affect your eligibility to graduate.

8. If I started the AT program before 2021, do I need to take the newly added required courses?

No, you do not, although we encourage you to do so as they have been included to enhance your skills as an Athletic Therapist.

You should have your course audit reviewed so that your course map can be verified for graduation.

You will be required to take new courses that have replaced the courses that were in the old program such as Musculoskeletal Support Techniques instead of Taping and Splinting.
