From Neurons to Networks: Exploring the Brain and Reshaping Research Culture
In this talk we will explore how to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to estimate the size of microscopic structures within the brain, such as axon diameters. The results of several students' and postdocs' tests of different MRI methods on a human autopsy sample and mouse brains will be presented. The second part of the talk will focus on programs to make science and physics more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
BIO: Dr. Melanie Martin received her BSc (Hons) in Physics from University of Manitoba, and a MS, MPhil, and PhD from Yale University. She was a postdoc and associate scientist at Caltech before returning to Winnipeg. She is the Acting Associate Dean of Science, and a Professor of Physics at The University of Winnipeg, and the co-director of The University of Winnipeg Brain and Metabolic Research Lab.
