Math Access Courses

Need Pre-Calculus 40S to enter a course? Obtain the equivalent over the course of two terms:

MATH-0041 Mathematics Access I and MATH-0042 Mathematics Access II

If you were not able to study Pre-Calculus 40S in High School and need it to take courses at the University of Winnipeg, or if you want to upgrade your math, we now offer two courses which (together) will be considered as an equivalent.

I. MATH-0041(0)  Mathematics Access I This course covers mathematics from school math courses. Topics include the real number system, integer and fraction arithmetic, exponents and radicals, polynomial arithmetic and algebraic expressions, rational expressions, equation solving techniques, coordinate geometry, lines, functions, and geometry of right-angled triangles.

This course can be used in lieu of an Applied Math 40S prerequisite for MATH-2903 only; it cannot be used in lieu of an Applied Math 40S prerequisite for any other course.

This course may be audited by students who have passed Applied Math 40S, Pre-Calculus 30S, or Pre-Calculus 40S.

Note: This is a non-credit course offered over 12 weeks.

RECOMMENDED Prerequisites: Grade 10 Pre-Calculus 20S, Grade 11 Pre-Calculus 30S, or Grade 11 Applied Mathematics 40S or permission of department.

Restrictions: Students who are registered in high school may not register in this course.

II. MATH-0042(0)  Mathematics Access II  This course covers mathematics from high school pre-calculus courses.  Topics include the binomial theorem, fractional equations, factorization of polynomials, the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, synthetic division, complex numbers, inequalities, relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, circular functions, trigonometry and sequences and series.

This course can be used in lieu of Pre-Calculus 40S Mathematics for all university prerequisites.

This course may be audited by students who have passed Pre-Calculus 40S.

Note: This is a non-credit course offered over 12 weeks.

Prerequisites for MATH-0042: In order to enroll in MATH-0042, a student must have

  • successfully completed MATH-0041 with a grade of C+ or above, or
  • completed Pre-Calculus 30S with a grade of 65% or higher (high school transcript must be presented to the Department of Mathematics & Statistics) or
  • received 65% or higher on the  MATH-0042 entrance test, which is usually offered on specified dates in April, August, and December

Restrictions: Students who are registered in high school may not register in this course.
