Application

Are there any prerequisites to apply?

There are no specific coursework required to apply to the MMFT program. A 4-Year Bachelor degree from a recognized postsecondary institution is required. An Honours Bachelor degree, or a Master’s degree will be considered an asset. Related training (e.g., a Counselling Certificate) is also an asset.

What are the minimum GPA requirements?

An overall GPA of 3.0 is the minimum requirement.

Are there any additional requirements for international applicants?

Yes. If English is not your first/primary language and you are not from an English Exempt Country, you must provide a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100, with a score of at least 22 on the writing and speaking component, or PBT score of 600. Alternately, a minimum IELTS score of 7.5 is required. Also, we accept a minimum score of 125 on Duolingo English Test. English language tests older than two years from the date of application will not be considered. Can I meet with someone to discuss the program?

Yes. Please contact Dr. Narumi Taniguchi (n.taniguchi@uwinnipeg.ca) to set up an appointment. Program information sessions take place in the fall. Please contact mftinfo@uwinnipeg.ca to be notified of the dates and times.

How many applicants are accepted?

Normally 12 students are accepted.

When can I apply?

Deadline for applications is February 1 for enrolment the following September.

What can I expect after I submit my application?

After initial screening of application materials, selected applicants are invited for an interview. Interview invitations are sent out at the end of March. Interviews take place mid-April. Final admissions decisions are made by the end of April.

Is there an interview?

Yes. Selected applicants are invited for a half-day interview including one-on-one and group interviews. This is an opportunity for the applicants to meet our instructors, supervisors, and existing students. Interview takes place in mid-April.

My undergraduate degree is not related to MFT. I have years of work experiences but not in human services. What can I do to strengthen my application?

Volunteer experiences at social services agencies, attending relevant workshops, taking counselling related courses are some of the ways to strengthen your application. 

What do you mean by helping profession?

Helping professionals work with people and help them grow, heal, and/or solve their problems. These professions include social work, psychological counselling, psychotherapy, medicine, nursing, education, ministry, etc.
