Indigenous design

Creating space, inviting dialogue

As you step into the redesigned University of Winnipeg Library, you will be welcomed by wayfinding tools that incorporate natural elements and weave Indigenous ways of knowing throughout the space.

Working with an Indigenous design firm, we are listening closely to the perspectives of local Indigenous nations,  integrating land-based knowledges and worldviews throughout the planning process.  As we make space for these elements, we are increasing the visibility of UWinnipeg’s commitment to relationship building and creating a daily reminder for our community to reflect on how and what that means.

For an academic library, this is more than highlighting Indigenous materials designating isolated pockets as Indigenous cultural spaces. The modern university — and by extension, the academic library — is a colonial construct. Rebuilding relationships with Indigenous nations requires us to rethink our systems, spaces, resources, and programming.

YOUR LIBRARY EXPERIENCE WILL INCLUDE:
1.
Aesthetics that showcase the intentionality of Indigenous artistic elements
2.  Study and multipurpose spaces equipped for smudging
3.  A rooftop indoor/outdoor teaching space and gathering lodge
4.  Indigenous-inspired wayfinding and navigational aids
