International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

My, Naomi Gichungu, field placement at the International institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) was truly a rewarding experience. I got to implement a research project with organizations working in the Hudson Bay seeking to enhance more inter-jurisdictional collaboration in the region. It was an opportunity to implement what I had learnt in my Indigenous research methods class. With the help of my supervisor I was able to conduct telephone interviews, online surveys and one on one interviews. The three months were fun filled from office lunches and movies to a visit to Churchill Manitoba. One of my major highlights was my trip to Churchill to conduct one on one interviews where I got to see polar bears and beluga whales. From these experiences I gained interview skills, report writing skills and people skills altogether. I am grateful to the IISD team and to especially Pauline my supervisor for her guidance and support and the MDP program for their financial support.
