Alumni Testimonials

The Environmental Studies program stood out for me for its interdisciplinary nature and flexibility. It allows for diverse approaches to environmental issues and includes a wide variety of academic experience that I found helpful in an undergraduate degree.

BA Honours

I’m a recent graduate of the 4-year BSc in Environmental Studies (Forest Ecology) program at the University of Winnipeg.  My experience with the program was wonderful.  It’s small enough that professors and students can get to know each other well, yet it also offers a lot of opportunities for students to find out what interests them and to pursue those interests.  During my time in the program, I was able to take field courses, work for two summers as a research assistant, and even participate in academic conferences.  I’m now enrolled in an MSc program in Geography at Queen’s University, something I never would have imagined myself doing when I started my BSc, and it’s largely due to the guidance and advice I received from my professors at the UofW.  I also gained many valuable friends who made the experience even more rewarding!

MSc student, Department of Geography, Queen's University

The University of Winnipeg’s Environmental Studies program familiarized me with the complex and evolving nature of environmental issues, which extend beyond the scientific domain into the social, economic and the ethical. This is where the holistic, interdisciplinary approach of the curriculum really shined for me, in addition to the flexibility granted by having a variety of choices in terms of courses and study streams. A well-rounded education is particularly exemplified in the applied environmental sciences stream that operates jointly with Red River College where I was prepared for the realities of employer demand. I now have a better understanding of the prospects in the current job market for environmental professionals. All in all, I never felt unduly restricted in the pursuit of my academic interests and the supportive faculty members provided critical one-on-one consultation when their expertise and guidance was requested.
