Caring Art Crits and Conversation for Intermediate to Advanced Beaders with Beading Experts Katherine Boyer, Sherry Farrell Racette, and Jennine Krauchi
Date: Sunday, March 15th, 2026, 1-4 p.m.
Location: Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre (main floor, 511 Ellice Avenue)
This free gathering will provide opportunities for local beaders to visit, share samples of their work, and receive feedback and encouragement from other Indigenous artists in a friendly and communal setting.
It is also an opportunity for registrants to apply for a short, one-on-one art crit from one of the following beading experts: Katherine Boyer, Sherry Farrell Racette or Jennine Krauchi. Advice on technical aspects, concepts, and beading design choices (tension, colour and size selection, choice of stitch, motifs, meaning, etc.) will be provided. A maximum of 15 beaders will be selected and paired with one of the experts beforehand.
What is a Caring Art Crit? In visual arts studio practices, it is often a requirement that learners present their art to instructors and fellow peers for evaluation, suggestions, and encouragement. When many learn to bead in a mentorship program, a group setting, or from an aunty in their family, there is usually some caring art crit that also happens. This is not new – the artists in Beading Métis Resurgence exhibit have all had their work and techniques critiqued with care, and ancestor artists would have as well, to achieve the technical and visual perfection of their beaded efforts. The goal of the one-on-one art crits is to provide some technical advice, encouragement, and conceptual suggestions from the beading experts. Katherine Boyer, Sherry Farrell Racette and Jennine Krauchi all have ample experience in teaching, and providing thoughtful and encouraging feedback to artists who work with beads.
Schedule:
12:00-12:45 Optional short visit to the exhibition Beading Métis Resurgence at Gallery 1C03
1:00 Event begins
1:00-2:00 Introduction of the three beading experts, a quick introduction of registrants and their bead work, light refreshments will be served
Please Note: Introduction of registrants and their art to the group is optional. If registrants want to introduce themselves and their beading but require assistance or would prefer to do so with a helper/support person they bring, please let us know on the registration form
2:00-2:10 Short health break
2:10-4:00 Group visiting in the main room, and one-on-one Caring Art Crits in adjacent room. Helpers will let people know when it is their scheduled crit time and will bring them to the beading expert that has been selected.
4:00 Closing of event
Each one-on-one crit will be a maximum of 15 minutes in duration. The beading experts guiding the crit sessions have asked that selected participants:
- bring one of the first beaded works they created if they still have it (or the earliest work they may still have).
- bring a more recent work, and a beading piece they are currently working on, or plan to start. Please do not bring more than 3-4 works.
- be willing to share and speak about their work in this setting.
Please note that space is limited. Completing the registration and the application for a one-on-one crit does not guarantee your spot. We will respond as soon as possible to confirm your acceptance and whether you have been selected for a one-on-one crit.
If you are accepted to the event, but not selected for a one-on-one crit, we hope that you will still attend the group gathering in the main room. This will still be an opportunity to receive feedback and encouragement as other beaders will be attending, and the three beading experts will do their best to make time to share encouragement and feedback in the group gathering.
