57th Algonquian Conference – Oct. 17-19, 2025

“Bridging Knowledges, Building Trust”

Conference Description

The theme of the 57th Algonquian Conference (AC 57), “Bridging Knowledges, Building Trust,” emphasizes the importance of fostering collaborative and respectful partnerships across communities and disciplines. The gathering theme centers relational accountability in the recognition and application of Indigenous knowledges and the co-creation of new knowledges. We invite participants from many backgrounds as we create a “third space” to share stories, learnings, research, and experiences with care and humility. We aim to create a positive environment for relationship building and networking amongst participants.

AC 57 will be held in Winnipeg at the University of Winnipeg, the homeland of the Red River Métis Nation, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and Treaty One Territory, from Friday, October 17, to Sunday, October 19, 2025.

This conference is an international meeting for Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and community members to share learnings/research relating to ‘Algonquian’ and related peoples, the largest First Peoples group in Canada. Fields of interest include, but are not limited to, anthropology, archaeology, art, biography, education, ethnography, ethnobotany, geography, history, Indigenous studies, land-based education, language education, language technology, linguistics, literature, music, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, and theatre.

Student Travel Grant Opportunity

We are pleased to offer a limited number of travel grants of $1000 CAD to assist students and recent graduates in attending the conference. Successful applicants will also receive free registration and admission to our Friday night celebration. In exchange, we will ask successful applicants to help out with logistics, such as registration or chairing a session. Special consideration will go to Indigenous students, particularly those who are involved in reclaiming/revitalizing Algonquian languages. Depending on funding and the number of applications received, we may also consider Indigenous community members who are not students/recent graduates with demonstrated need.
