Arts, Science, Business or Kinesiology

  1. Think about your academic strengths and your interests, hobbies and work experiences.  What do you enjoy learning about?

See the "What are you interested in?" CHART  to connect YOUR interests to OUR academic departments.  Click on the links to take you to various department websites.

  2.  Look at the first-year courses - usually 1000 level - in your departments of interest and read the course descriptions.  There are two ways to do this:

    • One is to use WebAdvisor and search for 1000 level courses:

      • a)go to the "guest" or "prospective student" section of WebAdvisor [do NOT log in]

b)select a term - start with Fall-Winter; then do just Fall or just Winter in your next searches

b)in the “Course Level” field, choose “1000”

        c) browse through all the courses OR refine your search by selecting up to two departments of interest at a time, e.g. psychology and sociology

    • Another way is to look in the Course Calendar, in the Areas of Study (undergraduate) section.  Click on the departments you are interested in knowing more about.  Identify the 1000 level courses.  You will then need to look at the Timetable (or WebAdvisor) to see if and when the course is being offered.

  3. IF you have a particular specialty [major] in mind, make sure you take the introductory course in that department and look carefully at other requirements of that major.

    • See the You First Sample Courses for a general guide to first-year choices.

    • In the Course Calendar, go to the section on Areas of Study (undergraduate). Click on the specific department offering the major you are interested in.  This is where you will find the Major requirements outlined, a listing of all courses that department offers, as well as descriptions of each course and any pre-requisites.

  4. Taking an Academic Writing course helps all students refine their university level critical reading, academic writing and research skills.  It is also a required course for most students who intend to complete an undergraduate degree at The University of Winnipeg.  There are several different kinds of Academic Writing courses to choose from - see "Rhetoric, Writing and Communication" under Areas of Study (undergraduate)  in the Course Calendar or search 1000-level "RHET" courses in WebAdvisor.

  5. NARROW THE LIST OF YOUR POSSIBILITIES (DOWN TO 5 to 10 COURSES OF INTEREST) AND GET READY TO MAKE A TIMETABLE!
