Green Action Centre

Mohamed Crossman-Serb, a first-year MDP student, worked with the First Nation’s Waste Minimization program (FNWM) team at the Green Action Centre (GAC) for his local field placement.

The GAC primarily focuses on composting, waste reduction, green commuting and sustainable living. A team within GAC, FNWM works to support First Nation community initiatives at reducing and diverting waste such as increased recycling/composting projects, community awareness, and working with producer responsibility programs to divert stewarded waste.

Mohamed’s role at FNWM was as the community engagement coordinator, consisting of school presentations on waste reduction, facilitation of a Webinar on waste, and helping the pathfinder team whenever possible. His role saw him go to the communities of Peguis, Ochekwi Sipi (Fisher River), Makadewaagamijiwanoonsing (Little Black River), Pimicikamak (Cross Lake), St. Theresa Point, and Bigwan Shkoo Ziibi (Roseau River) over the course of the summer.

I am incredibly thankful to the team at the Green Action Centre for their patience in teaching me about the complex systems of waste diversion. I am also very humbled to see the work being done by landfill staff all across Manitoba who work tirelessly to protect our land and waters from pollution.”
