Shynnia Kipling-AppleyardBoozhoo Aaniin, Mikisew Oshcaabkwe (Shynnia) nindizhinikaaz Peguis First Nation nindoonjii. Ogaa nindoodem zhigo Winnipeg nindayaa. Ningagwe-Anishinaabem. I grew up in Winnipeg Point Douglas and North End area all my life, I’ve experienced hardships throughout my life and so to even be accepted into the MDP is a huge accomplishment. Education is important my mother always said that and so I am taking the MDP Indigenous development because it algins with my goals as I further my career within the social services field. The MDP program will help me further develop my skills and understanding of development within First Nation communities and I know as a First Nation this looks different for each community recognizing I am a visitor to those communities. There is no other program that suites my educational and professional needs as the MDP Indigenous development will. As a healer and helper, I feel the MDP program itself is the right choice to learn, grow and develop my skills.

Areas of interest for research are:

  1. Indigenous food sovereignty in an urban setting
  2. Land-based learning and healing within CFS agencies
  3. Indigenous health and wellness, mental health and well being
  4. Recovery and support in First Nation communities, what programs are offered and how can one increase after care support
  5. Learning about plants, medicines, and teas. How is the environment impacted and how can we increase community care.

These are some areas of interest that I would like to further research during my time at the MDP.
