Awards

The Modern Languages & Literatures department annually offers a combination of competitive and automatic awards. They are merit-based and are specific to our program. We can only consider students who have declared their major for awards. The University of Winnipeg has academic advisors who can help you determine your major and plan your degree.

If applicable:

Some awards require an essay submission, references or descriptions of your extra-curricular activities. Please read the award description for more information.

  • You can apply for these awards by completing our General Application
  • and any specific award applications in the “Recommended Opportunities” available to you through our online portal.

The Awards and Financial Aid Office also has numerous awards available for current UW students. Apply online every term.

Undergraduate Awards

Der Berliner Club 1954 Scholarship

Established in 1986 by Der Berliner Club 1954, this scholarship is to be awarded annually to a student entering a second year of studies in German who demonstrates academic promise in this field. 

Charlotte Marie Kennedy Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established in 1986 by the family and friends of Charlotte Marie Kennedy, is awarded to a full-time student who has achieved high standing in first year German and is proceeding to second year with a Major in German Studies.

Ganesan Sri Ram Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in memory of Ganesan Sri Ram, a 1997 graduate of the University of Winnipeg. It will be presented alternately to a student of distinction who is majoring in French Studies or German Studies. 

German-Canadian Business and Professional Association Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with high academic standing in GERM-2001(6), Intermediate German, who is continuing in German.

Prizes and Travel Awards

German-Canadian Studies Prizes

These prizes, donated by the German-Canadian Foundation, is awarded to the two students who obtain the highest standing in at least two courses related to German civilization and literature, or German-Canadian immigration. Students may obtain the list of acceptable courses from either the Chair in German-Canadian Studies or from the Director of Awards & Financial Aid. 

German Consulate Book Prizes

Several book prizes are awarded annually at the discretion of the German Studies section to students who have achieved distinction in German Studies. The prize books are a gift of the German Consulate General in Toronto. 

German-Canadian Studies Travel Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to assist a student who wishes to study at the University of Bamberg or at another university in Germany. The scholarship is open to any University of Winnipeg student who has completed at least 30 credit hours, has proficiency in the German language, and who intends to complete a degree at the University of Winnipeg. Preference many be given to a student majoring in German Studies or pursuing courses in German-Canadian Studies.

Graduation Awards

Major and Honours Gold Medal

These awards are made to an exceptional graduating student exclusively on the basis of Grade Point Average. 

Swiss Ambassador Book Prize for Distinction in German Studies

This award, a gift of the Ambassador of Switzerland, is normally awarded upon the Department's recommendation to the runner-up for one of the Gold Medals.
