Pawan K. Singal is an internationally renowned cardiovascular researcher, educator, and highly regarded community leader in Manitoba. He is a professor of physiology and has served as the director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

As a researcher, Singal has made significant contributions to understanding the mechanisms of heart failure due to chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment of cancer patients — research with the potential to improve cancer treatment outcomes. He is also an innovative teacher, student mentor, and established academic who has published 280 papers, co-edited 25 books, and trained more than 100 students, fellows, and visiting scientists.

In recognition of his work, Singal holds the Naranjan S. Dhalla Chair at the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation and he has been awarded The Fleckenstein award for outstanding achievements in cardiovascular research. The University of Manitoba established the Pawan K. Singal Award for Graduate Students in Cardiovascular Sciences. His name has also been added to Manitoba’s Wall of Fame and the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Heart Award for outstanding contributions as a Heart Research Builder in Manitoba.

Singal’s commitment to community and cultural understanding is reflected in his commitment to the India Centre for Academic, Business and Community Excellence — a partnership between The University of Winnipeg and the India Association of Manitoba. The India Centre works to raise awareness in Canada and India about the common outlooks and values that promote democratic and culturally diverse societies.

As a community leader, Singal is an accomplished fundraiser who has helped support numerous projects, including a $5 million campaign for the Pandey Hindu Centre. He has been recognized dozens of times by local, national, and international organizations for his community-minded efforts.

Nationally and internationally, Singal has served on the boards of several organizations, including St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, International Society for Adaptive Medicine, and the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences.

The University of Winnipeg is proud to award Dr. Pawan K. Singal an Honorary Doctor of Laws in recognition of his continued passion for cardiovascular research, his enduring drive for community engagement, and his efforts to create cross-cultural understanding.
