Exercising interest in physical activity

Dr. Yannick Molgat-Seon

Dr. Yannick Molgat-Seon is a huge Toronto Raptors fan. He is an avid cyclist and runner, and believes in the benefits of exercise for overall health. He has taken these interests to a higher level as an exercise physiologist.

Catching your breath

When he started at university, Molgat-Seon wanted to learn everything he could about the human body. His research focuses on how it functions during physical activity. “Studying the respiratory physiology of exercise gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for physical activity and for better understanding the complexities of the human body.”

In particular, Molgat-Seon studies how the respiratory system — which includes the lungs, airways, rib cage, and respiratory muscles — responds to physical exertion. He is also interested in determining how biological factors such as aging and respiratory disease can affect our ability to exercise.

Involving learners in research

His research would not function without the help and assistance of his students. Every year, he recruits interested students to work in his laboratory and learn how research is conducted: “Together, we work on a series of research projects. These experiences allow my students to extend what they’ve learned beyond the classroom.”

Molgat-Seon chose to teach at UWinnipeg because he believes the university equally emphasizes high-quality teaching and innovative research, which sets it apart from other post-secondary institutions. The small class sizes allow him to develop a close relationship with his students and deliver a more personalized learning experience, while the vibrant and diverse campus environment allows for a unique exchange of ideas and serves as a knowledge hub for the surrounding community.

He also has close ties to Winnipeg and is a proud franco-Manitoban: “I knew that I wanted to work in a place that embraced my cultural identity.”

Guiding new students

Molgat-Seon notes that being a first-year student can often be intimidating. His advice to first-year students? “Engage with your professors! They’re always there to help you succeed in your studies and in life.”

Get in Touch

He also suggest getting involved in clubs and student groups as much as possible and take courses that you are genuinely curious about. “Try not to limit yourself.  Don’t be afraid to stray off the beaten path.”

Keeping in shape

When Molgat-Seon is not on campus you might find him in his kitchen trying new recipes — or you might spot him walking to work, running through his neighborhood, or going on long hikes in local parks. He says that is when he does most of his thinking!
