For their 2021 summer placement, Alex Cote partnered with Kanikanichihk within their Butterfly Club (BC) program. Through the program, Alex worked remotely developing programming to help foster Indigenous ways of knowing and being for Indigenous girls and Two-Spirited youth, 9-13 years of age. The program strives to help these young folks develop cultural, social, and leadership abilities through environmental stewardship, self-development, and community involvement. In addition to Alex’s participation with BC, they also worked within the Winnipeg community delivering care packages to various community members. Through this placement, Alex was able to develop stronger ties to Winnipeg communities and organizations.

Working within Kani was such an amazing experience to learn, share, and develop my experience further. I will forever cherish the privilege and opportunity that I was trusted with through this placement. However, my favorite moment was, without a doubt, being able to have a BC meeting in person in the last week of my placement. The ability to see all the up-and-coming young Indigenous folks in person, building their community! Through laughing, a small water balloon fight, and a summer themed feast of fruit and ice cream!
