First Nations Health & Social Secretariat Manitoba

Christy Bird commenced upon her first field placement with First Nations Health and Social Secretariat Manitoba in Health Research Information Governance Committee (HIRGC) area. HIRGC oversees and ensures that Manitoba regional research and data is protected, and that research is conducted respectfully with First Nation communities' best interest at the forefront. Christy collected data of research projects that have been conducted with and on Manitoba First Nations communities. The objective was to determine research with open accessibility and research exclusive to access only through academia and journals that are accessible with fees associated. Open access to research utilizing data from First Nation communities and peoples is imperative to ensure that data and objectives can enhance community standards and build upon more research.

"I have gained so much more understanding about the importance of data sovereignty, and respectful practises and protocols that should be implemented within research projects when working with First Nations peoples. Valuable knowledge that I can apply as a move forward in my journey with MDP and career."
