Te Whanau o Waipareira

For the summer of 2019 Chelsie Parayko was based in Auckland, New Zealand Aotearoa where she was a Wai researcher for the whānau at Waipareira participating in three major projects:

Te Reo Matahiapo Evaluation
This project looked at three language nests that were operationalised one year ago, evaluating their efficiency and areas of improvement. Each program was designed to target various peoples who have various understanding of te reo and was a completely free service.

Kaumatua Whānau Ora
This is a scoping project for the proposal of a pilot program aimed at addressing the very imminent increase of elderly people and the lack of services currently in place. Through the scoping we identified potential partners to include in the pilot program and for ongoing service delivery, critical spaces that need to be addressed and current offerings.

Te Kura Nui o Waipareira
The whānau at Waipareira have developed a journal aimed at honouring the Indigenous knowledge that knowledge keepers hold. This year the team is releasing their third issue on kotahitanga, unity. I was asked to write journal entry on the perspective of kotahitanga as a Cree woman from Canada visiting Aotearoa.
