Environmental Justice in India

Cassandra Szabo and Ari Phanlouvong were both involved in a SSHRC-funded project led by Dr. Alan Diduck and Kirit Patel (UWinnipeg) that focused on environmental justice in India. The main goal of the project was to look and how marginalized individuals in India are being impacted by environmentalism, meaning how are decisions made about the environment impacting those who have less power.

Cassandra's specific project was on sand mining, and how the National Green Tribunal of India handled this case. She conducted interviews and focus groups with the impacted village and looked at secondary literature and wrote a paper on the importance of participation in environmental justice.

Ari's research was focused on a port expansion project in Goa. She conducted several interviews with local residents and activists. She analyzed data and wrote a paper.
