Te Whānau o Waipareira

Paige Sillaby and Sarah Wood spent their international field placement with Te Whānau o Waipareira. Waipareira is a large urban Māori service provider in West Auckland, offering approximately 50 services in areas of social, education, health and justice.

Paige was based in Strategy, Innovation and Research units which focused on developing new and innovative approaches to family development and evidence based research. Her primary research project was to work alongside key staff to research and document the Rautaki Māori – Work-Placed Language Revitalization Strategy pilot. The culmination of this research was a summary report with a toolkit that can be used to implement workplace language revitalization strategies in Canada from an Indigenous perspective. My key research activities have included: literature review, developing an interview questionnaire and conducting interviews with key staff, developing a survey tool for staff to complete, thematic analysis of surveys and interview responses, and write up of research and interview findings into a professional report.

Sarah was placed with Wai-Research, the kuapapa Maori research arm of Waipareira. She completed a literature review on Maori ageing, as well as other research activities such as interviews and data analysis.
