International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

Amanda Appasamy spent her summer with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). She was involved in a variety of activities some of which included: the creation of a user-friendly community-level decision support tool for Ecosystem-based Adaptation in developing countries to emphasize the critical importance of ecosystems and ecosystem services to livelihoods; a report on the co-management of the Nelson-Churchill River Basin; and a literature review on mining companies engaging in positive relationships with Indigenous communities in Canada and internationally.

A highlight of her placement was the International Climate Summit at Turtle Lodge in Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba hosted by First Peoples with environmental leaders from different parts of the world. The conference focused on the use of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge to offer solutions to the climate change crisis.

"My placement at IISD has been an excellent learning experience. I had the opportunity to undertake research work, attended conferences and conduct interviews that have helped to enhance my understanding of the different challenges that communities face locally and internationally on multiple levels."
