Emmanuel Allieu
Hello, my name is Emmanuel I am from Sierra Leone and ethnically Mende. I lived in West Africa until the early 2000s. My family and I moved straight to Winnipeg, and I have lived here since. I am grateful to call Treaty One my new home. As a newcomer on Treaty One I am doing lots of (un)learning about the original peoples of this land, the histories, legacies of colonization and genocide by Europeans on the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island. I am strongly aware of our responsibilities as newcomers here and how our allyship is powerful resistance to colonial systems.
I completed my undergraduate degree in International Development Studies and did a second major in Conflict Resolutions Studies. Both programs played a huge role in informing my perspective on the state of the world and our everyday affairs. These studies carry elements of Social Justice, Political Science, Micro/Macro conflict analyses and Social Development. These programs not only prepared me for a great career, but they also enriched my life in very meaningful ways.
I have enjoyed working in many capacities in the non-profit industry. I worked with neurodivergent adults and youth for many years. I enjoyed working with newcomers and being reminded of my humble beginnings in Winnipeg. I most recently worked in social services advocating for children and youth rights in the province.
I am very drawn to the outdoors and spend lots of time enjoying the blessings nature gives. I enjoy camping and try to do solo camping retreats once or twice a year. I love music and will bang on drums, strum strings or sing whenever the opportunities arise. I dedicate springtime towards completing personal projects whether sewing, wood working or auto repair.
I am grateful to join the new cohort of MDP students, I look forward to being in community with everyone at the faculty and learning together.
