Wesmen Coach and Players Win Prestigious Awards

Tue. Mar. 13, 2018

UWinnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball Coach and two Winnipeg Wesmen student athletes have received important honours this March.

For the third time in his career, Larry McKay has been named the Canada West conference’s Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year. McKay, at the helm of the Winnipeg Wesmen men’s program for the past 29 seasons, was announced by the Canada West as the top coach in the conference on March 6, 2018. Also honoured that day was the Team's fifth-year Wesmen libero Logan Brennan with the Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award for his contributions off the court and in the community.

This week, student athlete Lena Wenke, 3rd year Wesmen forward from Germany, has won the national U Sport Tracy MacLeod Award presented to a women’s basketball player who shows courage in the face of adversity.

Wenke was the victim of a vicious assault in Winnipeg in May 2017 and was placed on life support for 24 hours following the attack. Remarkably, Wenke returned to UWinnipeg in the Fall and rejoined the women’s basketball team in November. Her courage and determination is truly inspiring.

We congratulate all of these remarkable individuals. Click on the links to learn more about their outstanding acheivements.
