Canada Life Business Student Scholarship and Work Placement; Enterprise Rent-a-Car Scholarship in Business and Economics
I would first like to thank all the donors part of the Business and Economics faculty for their generosity. Their efforts have had an incredible impact on past students, the students of 2022, and all future graduates.
As a full-time student who is also working a full-time job, having received these scholarships has greatly improved my time at the University of Winnipeg. The financial assistance both organizations provided have been of great help to me in my educational expenses and has allowed me to concentrate on the most important aspect of education: learning. As a result of these awards, I have been able to achieve academic success by being able to focus more on my studies. I’ve also been able to thrive in my classes and build deeper connections with the faculty and my fellow peers.
Thank you to both Enterprise and Canada Life for this incredible honour! I am truly grateful for the opportunity they’ve provided me. The awards have not only changed my time in university, but it has changed my life. I cannot wait for the day when I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me this year.
Message from the Dean
Dr. Hugh Grant
Dean of Business and Economics, The University of Winnipeg
I cannot express just how proud we are of this year’s award recipients in the Faculty of Business & Economics. Through their academic achievement and leadership, they are tremendous ambassadors for our university.
I also wish to take the opportunity to thank the donors. The support that our students have receive from such organizations as Canada Life, Red River Co-op and CPA Western School of Business has been instrumental in helping them in their studies and in establishing a career after university.
Equally gratifying is the support provided by many individuals. Let me mention two.
Sir Gordon Wu established a scholarship in his father’s name that supports a student from the Huada region of Guangzhou, China to study at the University of Winnipeg for four years. There is a fascinating story that explains how this scholarship came to be created, but I save that for another day. Rather I simply point out that the Wu Chung scholarship has consistently brought to the University of Winnipeg an outstanding student and the current holder of the scholarship, Wanshan Liu, is no exception.
In contrast, Joanne Ross Sutherland grew up on Colony Street, so it was natural that she would attend United College. She studied Economics and History and was in The University of Winnipeg’s first graduating class of 1968. Her plan was to then attend law school, but she was forced to enter the labour market for financial reasons. She went on to a rewarding career in government and industry, and never forgot the financial barriers that some students face in the pursuit of their educational goals. So she has given back to the University, supporting bursaries in the Department of Economics in their second, third and fourth year of study.
It is incredibly gratifying to see such a deserving group of students receive such generous support. My congratulations and heartfelt thanks.
