In May 2024, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Winnipeg, in collaboration with the Piapot First Nation (Treaty 4) and facilitated by KNT, successfully delivered a two-week Archaeological Field School in Saskatchewan, Canada. This course provided an applied introduction to subsurface survey methods that could be employed in the identification of potential unmarked graves associated with Indian Residential Schools (IRS). Designed as an integrative and community-engaged initiative, the field school brought together university students and Piapot community members for hands-on training alongside archaeologists and geophysical specialists from Canada and the United States.

Participants received instruction in archaeological field methods, engaged with community Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and visited historically significant sites to foster a broader understanding of the lasting impacts of the IRS system on First Nations communities. Emphasis was placed on conducting all activities in a respectful and collaborative manner, rooted in principles of cultural sensitivity and reconciliation.

We extend our sincere thanks to all community members, participants, instructors, and partners who contributed to the success of this unique educational experience.
