Biography:

My name is Shane Patterson, and I am an enrolled member of the great Ihanktowan Nation (Yankton Sioux Tribe). My ancestral homelands are in the southeastern corner of South Dakota. I represent the Ocheti Sakowin—Seven Council Fires of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota Nations. I was born and raised on these lands, learning a wealth of ancestral and traditional knowledge under the guidance of my parents, extended family, and relatives who mentored me throughout my life. I hold deep gratitude for all those who contributed to the transfer of our teachings.

For the past 25 years, I have resided in Canada, working within oppressive systems such as child welfare and health. In 2007, I graduated from the University of Manitoba with a double major in Native Studies and History. In 2024, I completed my Master’s Degree through the MDP Program at the University of Winnipeg.

Over the years, I have found my passion in supporting Indigenous communities through a wide range of initiatives, including lateral violence training, traditional wellness clinics, Indigenous plant medicine learning and administration, grief support, counseling, trauma-informed practice, and mentoring. I have also been deeply involved in teaching, sharing cultural knowledge, land-based practices, wellness philosophies, and community-based approaches with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners. Whether in formal educational settings or community-led environments, I strive to create learning spaces grounded in respect, humility, and the strengths of our Nations.

Guided by the philosophy of being a good relative, I work to develop innovative, authentic, and strengths-based approaches that meet relatives where they are at. I have come to understand that much of the work I do is not only community development but is deeply rooted in Indigenous worldviews, culture, and knowledge systems. I am deeply passionate sharing the teachings and practices of our way of life to various audiences. When our relatives walk closer to Creator, healing and deep meaningful connection draws that energy toward walking a deep and enriching life full of purpose and meaning.
