Research Interests:
Dr. Smith is interested in how the nervous system represents different emotional experiences. Using multiple forms of neuroimaging, Dr. Smith and his students investigate how emotions, attention, and movement interact; how people regulate—or fail to regulate—their emotional responses; and how feedback from the body (interoceptive awareness) influences experiences such as empathy and emotional contagion. Dr. Smith is also interested in how different personality traits such as alexithymia mediate all of these processes.
