Dear Donors,

On behalf of the students within the Faculty of Business and Economics, I would like to thank each of you for the investment you have made in our education and futures. I cannot emphasize enough the impact you all have had on our time here at The University of Winnipeg. Thanks to your generosity, you have provided students the opportunity to flourish in our studies.

I'm currently studying in two male-dominated fields: economics and computer science. I am honoured to have received these scholarships, but more than that, I am grateful that our donors are empowering women in underrepresented disciplines by providing resources and support for us to thrive in our fields.

My upcoming graduation has provided me an opportunity to reflect on my time here at the University. I started as an unengaged student, going to my classes and going home. Thankfully, that mindset changed when I accepted a position on the Service Partners and Community Initiatives Unit at Western Economic Diversification (WD), a regional development agency for the Federal Government. I saw the real-world impact of economics and found myself looking for opportunities to get involved with the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Department of Economics.

I started marking for professors and joined The University of Winnipeg’s Team for the Bank of Canada’s Governor’s Challenge. I met students who were passionate about economics and committed to creating a community within the department, specifically through the Finance and Economics Students’ Association (FESA). I got involved with FESA and my experience marking for economics professors influenced me to develop a Vice-President of Academic Services position. Through this position, I executed a tutoring centre that provided students the resources and support needed to excel in their courses and, in the following year, I became the first female president of FESA.

The student groups throughout both the Faculty of Business and Economics and The University of Winnipeg provide students opportunities to get involved within our departments and develop our skills. Regardless of which part of the faculty students belong to, there is a strong sense of community that brings us all together. This community would not be possible without the generosity of our donors providing the support that grants us the chance to participate in the work-integrated learning opportunities and have the financial freedom to pursue extra-curricular involvement within our departments.

I was asked to write about my long-term plans in this letter. I’ll be the first to admit that this was quite a daunting task. Gaining work experience throughout my degree has amplified the value I place on experiential learning. As such, I have accepted a year-long policy analyst and economist position at Western Economic Diversification Canada. With the funding I received through my scholarships, I have started saving for a master’s degree to compliment my work experience with formal education.

Again, I would like to thank the donors who have impacted mine and so many of my classmate’s experiences at The University of Winnipeg. We are very grateful for your continued generosity and support.
